Spooky Movie Night

  • Creation of the Humanoids

    Presentation for Friday 04.20.12
Surprisingly interesting film that holds up much better than the horribly dated affair that I was expecting. Special effects are what you'd expect for 1962, but the story is pretty solid. Includes quite an interesting little plot twist that I did NOT see coming. With Alex gone & Summer only making it halfway through (more a commentary about her than the movie) it was just Corbin and I awake at the end, and we both applauded.
  • Chandu the Magician

    Presentation for Friday 04.13.12
You either like this kind of stuff or you don't...and we really do! Bela Lugosi hams it up as always in this tale of powerful magician Chandu coming straight out of his yogi training to use his newly refined magical powers in service of the greater good – namely, saving the world from Bela and his newly stolen Death Ray. I like the idea that someone could have something called a Death Ray and be upset that it's going to be used to kill people. I mean, it IS called a DEATH Ray, right? Mindless fun (the best kind).
  • The Cyclops

    Presentation for Friday 04.06.12
Yes!! A gloriously over-the-top cheesefest that is a good example of what SMN is all about. Woman goes into the wilds of Mexico in search of a lost fiance only to find giant beasts, a weasley Lon Chaney Jr. and a 30 ft. one-eyed man with a melted face. Surprisingly gruesome for 1956 (this DVD reinserts a scene that was cut from earlier releases) - but lots and lots of fun! Another from the Warner Archive - that they would take the time to remaster such a film is just so cool!
  • The Snow Devils

    Presentation for Friday 03.30.12
Warner Archive ran a great sale recently and I was able to pick up a big stack of DVDs from them really cheap. Some were remastered classics and some were more in the "lost classics" category. The Snow Devils falls into the latter. And there's a reason it was lost. Was OK, but you didn't feel it was put together with the same love that many movies in this genre are. A bad classic horror movie assembled with love is still a fun time (Ed Wood atrocities, for example). Kids really liked it - so, in the end, that's all that matters anyway.
  • Attack of the 50 Ft. Woman

    Presentation for Friday 03.23.12
Amazingly, in the 10+ years of Spooky Movie Night, we had never witnessed the cult classic that some might think define the genre. Think of classic horror & sci-fi from the 50's and this would make the top 10 list of most – even from those that aren't even fans of this fare. All that said, it never lives up to the poster (which is itself a classic). Apparently, if you grow to 50 ft. tall, you only get one facial expression as a result. How sad.
  • Cosmic Monsters

    Presentation for Friday 03.16.12
A little-seen British film that has the main component that covers a multitude of cinematic shortcomings: GIANT BUGS Baby! I'm sorry, but any time you've got giant bugs you get 8 thumbs-up from the Adkins Spooky Movie Night crew!
  • The Manster

    Presentation for Friday 03.09.12
Strange science-gone-wrong story that results in a second, very rubbery, head growing out of the victim's shoulder. But before the head, he gets just an eye in his shoulder - and that was actually even creepier. The victim wasn't a particularly likable chap, so you really don't mind the horror that befalls him. The eye freaked the kids out pretty good!
  • War of the Worlds

    Presentation for Friday 03.02.12
What can you say that hasn't been said. It's a solid classic that holds up VERY well still today. Unlike the Devil Girl from Mars who enters, gives ultimatums and leaves again, these Martians don't play that. They are here to kick butt and chew bubblegum – and they're all out of bubblegum! Bravo!
  • Devil Girl From Mars

    Presentation for Friday 02.24.12
Martian space vixen in leather miniskirt comes to Earth to bring men back to Mars for – what else – breeding! This was a somewhat popular idea in 50's sci-fi. Pretty fun stuff and good (dare I say it) character development. Summer (my 7 yr old) LOVED this – it's now one of her favorites.
  • Dr. Renault's Secret

    Presentation for Friday 01.27.12
Chronicling our movies here stopped, but SMN has gone on non-stop, every week at the Adkins home, just me and the three chillens, for over 10 years.

I LOVE finding a classic horror film that I've never seen before (increasingly hard). Dr. Renault's Secret (1942) is a bit akin to Island of Lost Souls. An ape is turned into a human, but the animal nature remains. Gotta say, J. Carrol Naish is unnervingly creepy in his brilliant portrayal of Noel. Thrilling stuff!
  • The Mummy's Hand

    Presentation for Friday 10.30.09
Breaking out some classics. Hard to believe that we've actually never watched these before. Aside from the original The Mummy, this collection has four other "suffixed" sequels: The Mummy's Hand; Tomb, Ghost; and Curse. We're gonna plow throw them all. This one was very good. Origin of Kharis and obligatory tomb desecration & revenge! Creepy fun!
  • Battle in Outer Space

    Presentation for Friday 10.23.09
Another from the Toho Icons of Science Fiction 3-mnovie set: Battle in Outer Space! Expected to not like this too much, but we all found it very fun. Charming innocence comes through - in between laser blasts and flying saucers of course!
