Spooky Movie Night

  • Dr. Renault's Secret

    Presentation for Friday 01.27.12
Chronicling our movies here stopped, but SMN has gone on non-stop, every week at the Adkins home, just me and the three chillens, for over 10 years.

I LOVE finding a classic horror film that I've never seen before (increasingly hard). Dr. Renault's Secret (1942) is a bit akin to Island of Lost Souls. An ape is turned into a human, but the animal nature remains. Gotta say, J. Carrol Naish is unnervingly creepy in his brilliant portrayal of Noel. Thrilling stuff!
  • The Mummy's Hand

    Presentation for Friday 10.30.09
Breaking out some classics. Hard to believe that we've actually never watched these before. Aside from the original The Mummy, this collection has four other "suffixed" sequels: The Mummy's Hand; Tomb, Ghost; and Curse. We're gonna plow throw them all. This one was very good. Origin of Kharis and obligatory tomb desecration & revenge! Creepy fun!
  • Battle in Outer Space

    Presentation for Friday 10.23.09
Another from the Toho Icons of Science Fiction 3-mnovie set: Battle in Outer Space! Expected to not like this too much, but we all found it very fun. Charming innocence comes through - in between laser blasts and flying saucers of course!
  • The H-Man

    Presentation for Friday 10.16.09
Love finally seeing movies I've wanted to see for a long time. Bought the Toho Icons of Science Fiction 3-mnovie set and popped in The H-Man! Turns out to be kinda like a Japanese version of The Blob. Once again we're faced with the burning question: "How do you stop a liquid monster?!?" And actually, burning figures into the mix. Creative story, cool effects, fun night!
  • The Leopard Man

    Presentation for Friday 10.09.09
One more from the Val Lewton Horror Collection I found at Disc Replay ($25 for 9 movies!) and no surprise – another GREAT film. My man Val made some pretty great spooky movies! Creepy murder mystery that, like all of Lewton's films we've seen from this set, holds up incredibly well still today.
  • The Ghost Ship

    Presentation for Friday 10.07.09
    Fall Break Bonus SMN!

Another from the Val Lewton Horror Collection I found at Disc Replay ($25 for 9 movies!) – a set proving to be a very great find indeed. The Ghost Ship showcases what is a Val Lewton hallmark: Eerie, chilling atmosphere surrounding intricate character-driven stories. Engrossing story of a ship captain going insane. Alex, at least 3x said, "I'm scared Daddy" - but she actually clapped at the end (I did too.)
  • I Walked With A Zombie

    Presentation for Friday 10.02.09
Found the Val Lewton Horror Collection at Disc Replay ($25 for 9 movies!) – this was the first one up. Very effective, atmospheric creepfest! The island natives and their rituals were unnerving, thanks in large part to the incessant jungle drums building to a fever pitch then stopping on a dime. A surprisingly intricate story line with tangled relationships – the zombie elements are more subdued, which I think makes them even more frightening because they seem more "real". A classic that cleanses the palette from last week's near-miss.
  • Journey to the Seventh Planet

    Presentation for Friday 09.25.09
A good idea is saddled with some of the worst dialogue ever committed to celluloid. I can overlook a lot in this genre, but this is painful. Great premise though. Alien monster inside Uranus uses astronauts' thoughts, desires and fears against them. Long before the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man we have the alien attacking the heroes with the things they fear the most. BUT, the monster is -- wait for it -- a giant brain with a big glowing eye in the middle of it. That makes up for an awful lot!
  • Donovan's Brain

    Presentation for Friday 09.18.09
Really good film about a mad scientist experimenting with keeping brains alive without the usual bodily housing. The brain starts to control the doc through telepathic impulses, and uses him to wrap up some illegal loose-ends he had left before the crash that took his life. Got a late start so Alex & I were the only one awake at the end. Really liked this one.
  • Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed

    Presentation for Friday 09.11.09
There's a reason he must be destroyed, kids - he is one crazy-evil dude! Peter Cushing is again great as the Doc, but he is even more mad than usual. The sympathetic tinge to the character from previous films is nowhere to be seen. At the end Summer (my 5 yr. old who really eats up the scary stuff) looked at me and deadpanned: "Hated it." Good, but not our favorite Hammer Franky movie.
  • Assignment Terror

    Presentation for Friday 09.06.09
Labor Day Weekend BONUS Spooky Movie Night : :
Saw this as a kid on Sammy Terry and thought it was the greatest thing ever (Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy & Wolfman all in one movie!) Saw a badly duped copy with my kids & found it a bit lacking. BUT. . both 2 of 3 kids (who stayed awake) responded with "AWESOME!!!" at the roll of the credits. And THAT'S why we do Spooky Movie Night!
  • Frankenstein Created Woman

    Presentation for Friday 09.04.09
Have been working our way through the Hammer Frankenstein movies (in order - except for the R-rated one obviously). The kids have learned to associate Peter Cushing in the opening credits with a great movie. Pretty cool. He doesn't disappoint here as the Doc performs plastic surgery along with the first-ever soul transplant! Imaginative, to say the least. Fun stuff!
  • 4D Man

    Presentation for Friday 06.26.09
A slightly ambiguous ending doesn't detract from a really good sci-fi storyline. This must not have originally been a "B-movie" since it was in color - quite the surprise for a 1959 sci-fi thriller. Big thumbs-up
