This blog is much like my youngest daughter Summer – a surprise.
I hadn't planned on doing a blog.
Didn't think I was in danger of having one.
And then wham!
Here it is – a brand new, bouncing baby blog.
How did this happen?
Unlike with a real baby, the answer is far less obvious – and easier to share with everyone.
It started in a booth at TGI Friday's with my good friend and Born to Design strategic partner Evan McBroom. We were talking about business and he asked this question: "Do you enjoy working best with designers or non-designers?" Non-designers was the quick answer. "I love explaining how design works, why things are designed the way they are, and how various elements communicate – I love seeing the light bulbs go off over their heads when they get it."
"You need to blog about that!" he told me, then spent the rest of lunch talking me into it.
Like any proud first-time parent, I have some plans for this new arrival. Design is all around us. We engage with it all the time – often without even realizing it. My hope is to pull back the curtain a little and explore the nuts and bolts of design; the whys and hows of design's ability to communicate, connect and inspire. And hopefully, through your comments, I'll glean new insights from you as well.
So here it is. I imagine, like a real baby, that I will find it a difficult adjustment at first. Hopefully, before long though things should get easier. And maybe I can even start getting some sleep again.
A hearty welcome to the new addition! Sign me up as one of your biggest non-designer fans!

I'll give Janice some competition.
I look forward to multitudinous lightbulb revelations ... and I hope the diapers aren't too stinky.

Congrats on the "new addition" and looking forward to seeing this baby grow! As a designer by default (I do it because we need it and I enjoy it - not because I was ever trained in it . . .) I look forward to adding to my own crayon box!

Sweet! Now I can stop reading all of your super insightful comments on everyone else's blogs and can start reading them on your OWN!

Congratulations! I love the "design for non-designers theme: good for your business, good for non-designers, and good for the design community. Win/win/win!
